For free farrowing systems to be economically viable for farmers, the level of piglet mortality must be on a par with that in conventional crate systems. Identifying the best sows for free farrowing systems can help achieve this. The research teams at SRUC and Newcastle University are working on a Sainsbury’s funded initiative (FREESOW) to create a profile of sows that are most suited to free farrowing systems. These data can be used by breeders to help producers pick the best mothers for these high welfare systems. For more information about the project please visit Sainbury's website.
